Dr. Surya B. Parajuli [Biography]
Dr. Surya B Parajuli is deeply committed to community-based healthcare, striving to improve health outcomes and contribute to achieving universal health coverage and sustainable development goals. His extensive 14-year journey involves active engagement in academia, research, clinical practice, health advocacy, and healthcare leadership. His academic achievements include a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Community Medicine and Tropical Diseases from B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from Kathmandu University, and a Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences from Tribhuvan University and pursuing Master of Public Administration (MPA) from same university. He completed a significant four-year Translation Research Fellowship supported by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
In academia, he holds the position of Head of the Department and serves as an Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital.
In the realm of research and innovation, he served as a site investigator for “A randomized, double-blind, clinical trial of two dose regimens of VINS polyvalent antivenom ATC J06AA03 for the treatment of Snakebites with neurotoxin envenoming in Nepal (n 08-192)” at B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in collaboration with Geneva University Hospital, Switzerland. He is a founding Editor of the Birat Journal of Health Sciences and Member Secretary of the Institutional Review Committee of Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital accredited by the Nepal Health Research Council. As an editor for biomedical journals such as PLoS One, BMC Health Services Research, Birat Journal of Health Sciences, Purbanchal University Health Journal, Europasian Journal of Medical Sciences, he actively participates in the review, analysis, and evaluation of scientific research. Furthermore, he is extensively engaged in assessing and evaluating scientific research proposals originating from various institutions, the Nepal Health Research Council, universities, and international sources. With a substantial number of scientific and health-related publications, he leads training programs on research ethics, proposal writing, publication strategies, biostatistics, leadership, and management in health. He also mentors young health science students in health research and aids local governments in formulating and implementing health policies.
In clinical care and health advocacy, he conceived and has been spearheading an innovative community-based healthcare initiative called the Budhiganga Health Survey. This program is directed at 12,000 households within the Budhiganga Rural Municipality in the Morang district of Nepal. It has operated in collaboration with local government bodies, community-based organizations, and academic institutions since the year 2015 AD.
In healthcare leadership and management, he serves as the Director of the Policy, Planning, and Research Department at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital. Additionally, he holds the position of vice president in the Nepalese Society of Community Medicine. He established and has led the Nepal Medical Volunteer Society, making significant contributions to clinical care, health advocacy, and leadership and management for the past ten years. Since 2011, he has been creating and hosting the widely popular radio health program "Doctor Saathi LIVE" as an eHealth initiative, reaching approximately 0.1 million listeners/viewers across 500 successful episodes.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as a member of the medical expert team advising the Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Nepal. Additionally, he also served as the Koshi Province representative within the COVID-19 Task Force of the Nepalese Society of Community Medicine.
He is currently leading Health Sector for the second provincial planning of Koshiprovince of Nepal.
